What is structured data and why does your business need it?
Structured data is the most common gap the AEO checker finds on local business websites, and the one most people have never heard of. Here is what it is, in plain language.
Structured data is code on your website that tells search engines and AI engines exactly what your business is, in language machines can read directly. Without it, an AI has to figure out what your business does from the regular text on your pages, the same way a person would read it. Most local websites do not give an AI enough to work with that way, so it either gets the answer wrong or passes the site over entirely.
This is the single most common issue the MapRankd AEO checker finds. Across hundreds of local business sites, no structured data at all is the most frequent result. It is also the gap that, when fixed, makes the biggest immediate difference to AI visibility.
What structured data actually is
Your website has two layers. The visible layer is what a person sees when they load the page: your company name, what you do, your phone number, your service area. The machine-readable layer is what AI engines read to understand the same information in a structured, unambiguous format.
Structured data, also called schema markup or JSON-LD, is that second layer. It is a block of code added to your page's HTML that says something like: this business is a plumbing company, it operates in San Antonio, its hours are Monday through Saturday 7am to 6pm, it offers water heater repair, drain cleaning, and emergency service. It does not require a customer to find that information by reading your page. The machine reads it directly.
JSON-LD is the format Google and most AI engines prefer. It is a self-contained block of text inside a script tag, separate from the rest of the page content, so it does not affect what the page looks like at all. It only affects what machines can extract from it.

Why it matters for AI search in particular
Traditional search engines got reasonably good at reading plain text and inferring meaning from it. AI engines are even better at inference. So why does structured data still matter?
Because when an AI engine is generating a local business recommendation, it is not just trying to understand your page. It is trying to be confident enough in that understanding to stake its recommendation on it. Structured data is what allows an AI to be confident. A site that explicitly says "this is a licensed plumber serving zip codes 78201 through 78260" is one the AI can cite with certainty. A site where the AI has to infer that you are a plumber from context is one it may pass over for a competitor that made it explicit.
For local businesses, the most important schema types are LocalBusiness (or a more specific subtype like Plumber, Electrician, or MedicalBusiness), Service, FAQPage, and Offer. Each tells an AI engine something different about what your business is and what it does for customers.
What happens without it
Without structured data, your site relies entirely on whatever text a page contains, and on the AI engine's ability to interpret that text correctly. There are three ways this fails for a local business:
- The AI misidentifies the business type. A site that says "we provide quality services" without specifying what services gives the AI very little to anchor on. It may categorize the business incorrectly or decline to categorize it at all.
- The AI cannot identify the service area. Schema markup includes explicit geographic coverage. Without it, the AI cannot confidently say this business serves customers in your city, which limits its ability to recommend you for location-specific searches.
- The AI skips the site entirely. When generating a shortlist, an AI engine prefers sources it can cite with confidence. A site with explicit, machine-readable information beats a site that requires inference, all else being equal.
This is why sites with strong structured data consistently outperform sites without it in AI-generated recommendations, even when the rest of the site's content is similar.
Is one page enough to carry structured data?
Yes. A single well-built page with the right schema markup outperforms a ten-page site with none. The structured data does not have to be spread across multiple pages to be effective. It just has to be complete, accurate, and present.
