Can you pay to get recommended by ChatGPT?

Short answer: no. You can buy a labeled ad, but OpenAI says ads cannot change its answers. Here is the difference, and how to spot a pitch that crosses the line.

A message lands in your inbox: get your business recommended by ChatGPT, guaranteed placement, sign up today. Is that real?

The honest answer has two parts. Ads in ChatGPT are real, and they are for sale. A guaranteed spot inside ChatGPT's answer is not something anyone can honestly sell you.

TL;DR

Can I pay ChatGPT to recommend my business?

No. OpenAI says ads on ChatGPT run on separate systems and cannot influence its answers. Advertisers can buy labeled ads, but by OpenAI's account that does not buy a place inside the answer. A labeled ad is a different product from a recommendation. Anyone selling guaranteed mentions is promising something OpenAI says ads cannot do.

That is OpenAI's own statement on its help page for ads. I have not been able to test it independently, so read it as what the company says, not as something I verified.

Does ChatGPT have sponsored results?

Yes. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the US on 9 February 2026, on its Free and Go plans, and says they are labeled sponsored. Google has also said ads can appear in its AI Overview with a Sponsored label. OpenAI describes ads as a separate paid product, not a ranking inside the answer.

OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not see ads at all.

Whether an ad is worth the money for a local business is a separate question. I have no data on it, so I will not guess.

How much do ChatGPT ads cost?

OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager is in beta, with bidding per click or per thousand views. Quartz and The Decoder report it is open to US businesses and that the earlier $50,000 minimum is gone. I found no official price list, so I will not quote a dollar figure.

OpenAI said in May 2026 that the self-serve tool was rolling out gradually to businesses of all sizes. The dropped minimum and the US availability come from news coverage, not an OpenAI price page, so check the current terms in Ads Manager before you spend.

Buying an ad puts a labeled message near an answer. It does not put your business inside the answer.

What are the red flags of an AI recommendation scam?

Be wary of anyone who promises guaranteed placement, claims a special relationship with Google or OpenAI, will not explain what they actually do, or contacts you unprompted. Google's own hiring guidance lists similar warning signs. Ask for a plain list of deliverables and how you can see them.

Google's hiring guidance (last updated June 2026) is written for search, but its warning signs carry over to anyone selling AI visibility:

My own addition: a monthly fee is not a red flag by itself. A fee with no listed deliverables is.

What can I actually do to improve my chances?

Make your business easy to verify: an accurate website, a complete Google Business Profile, and consistent details on the directories that list you. Google's guidance says to keep business information current and let crawlers in. None of this guarantees a mention. It gives an AI fewer reasons to skip you, though I cannot prove that.

In a 2025 BrightLocal test of 20 searches, business websites, Google Business Profile listings and directories all showed up as sources for local answers. It is a small and older test, so use it as a hint about where to look.

To see where you stand today, use the test in how to check what AI says about your business. If you are not showing up at all, why doesn't my business show up on ChatGPT? explains the common causes, and AI Visibility for Local Businesses shows how the pieces fit.

What do MapRankd's plans include, and what don't they promise?

I build a one-page website and a Google Business Profile for local businesses. The Managed plan adds a monthly AI visibility report, keyword-targeted Google Business Profile posts, and review reply drafts. I promise the work, not the result: no rankings, no AI mentions, no guarantees.

Prices: a $25 audit, $299 one-time, or $149 setup plus $149 a month for Managed. Apply the test from the section above to me. You can see what the monthly fee covers, you can cancel anytime, and you keep everything built.
