AI Visibility for Local Businesses
Search changed. Most local business websites were built for how Google worked five years ago. This is how to get found in the way people actually search now.
When someone needs a plumber, an HVAC tech, or a dentist today, they do not always open Google and scroll through ten blue links. A growing share of them type a question into ChatGPT, ask Google's AI Overview, or tell Gemini what they need. The AI answers with a short list of businesses. If your business is not on that list, the customer never finds out you exist.
This is not a prediction. It is already happening. Google's AI Overviews now appear in roughly one in five searches. ChatGPT has hundreds of millions of weekly users. Gemini is built into every Android device. The people who find you tomorrow will increasingly find you through AI, not through a list of blue links.
The businesses that show up on those AI-generated shortlists are not necessarily the best in their area. They are the ones whose websites and Google Business Profiles are structured in a way the AI can actually read, understand, and cite.
Why most local websites get skipped by AI
AI answer engines do not browse the internet the way a person does. They read structured information. When an AI engine encounters a website, it looks for specific signals: what kind of business is this, what does it do, where does it operate, what questions does it answer. A site built in 2019 for keyword density gives it almost none of them.
The most common gaps are straightforward to name and straightforward to fix:
- No structured data. Schema markup (JSON-LD) is the machine-readable layer that tells an AI engine your business type, service area, hours, and what questions you answer. Without it, AI has to guess, and it usually guesses wrong or passes you over.
- No FAQ content. AI engines specifically look for pages that answer real questions. A site with one photo, a phone number, and a tagline gives an engine nothing to cite.
- AI crawlers blocked. Some websites accidentally block the exact tools that recommend businesses through a misconfigured robots.txt or a security plugin.
- A Facebook page standing in for a website. A Facebook page gives an AI your name and category. It does not give it your service area, your hours, your answers to common questions, or what distinguishes you from competitors.

The two things that work together
AI visibility for a local business comes from two sources: a website built for AI search, and a Google Business Profile that is fully built and optimized. Neither one alone is enough.
Your website is where the depth lives. Service descriptions, FAQ content, schema markup, and proof of your expertise. A well-built one-page site does more for AI visibility than a ten-page site from 2018 with no structured data.
Your Google Business Profile is where Google's own AI reads local business data directly. Hours, categories, services, reviews, and Q&A. Google AI Overviews and Google Maps recommendations pull from GBP data, not just your website. A profile that has not been touched since you created it is leaving visibility on the table.
The goal is for both to tell the same story, in language AI can parse, consistently.
How to know where you stand
The free AEO/GEO checker on the MapRankd homepage checks five real signals on your live website: schema markup, AI crawler access, meta tags, content structure, and the newer llms.txt AI-readiness file. You get a score out of 100 and a plain-English explanation of what is holding you back. Takes about twenty seconds. No email required.
