Do Google Business Profiles still matter for AI search?
Yes, but not alone. Your GBP feeds Google's own AI directly, but it does almost nothing for ChatGPT and Gemini without a real website alongside it.
Google Business Profile still matters, and it matters specifically for Google's own AI products. Google AI Overviews, Google Maps, and voice search through Google Assistant all pull data directly from GBP. If your profile is incomplete, those products have less to work with, and a competitor with a complete profile outranks you.
What GBP does not do is put you in front of ChatGPT or Gemini on its own. Those tools search the web, and they primarily read websites, not Google's own database. For AI assistants outside of Google's products, your website is the primary source. This is why the two work together, and why having one without the other leaves gaps.
What Google uses GBP data for in 2026
Google's AI reads GBP data directly when generating local recommendations. The specific things it draws from:
- Business category. Your primary category is the single most important signal. A plumber with "General Contractor" as the primary category appears for the wrong searches and misses the right ones.
- Services list. GBP allows you to list individual services with descriptions. Google's AI reads these when someone asks about a specific service, not just a business type.
- Service area. For service area businesses, the cities and zip codes you list define where you appear. Leaving this blank or setting it too broadly dilutes your visibility in the areas where you actually work.
- Hours and attributes. Whether you offer emergency service, whether you are veteran-owned, whether you accept credit cards. These are the details that appear in AI-generated summaries of local options.
- Reviews and Q&A. Review sentiment and keywords appear in how Google describes a business. Q&A answers that you write yourself give Google direct quotes to use in summaries.

Why GBP alone is not enough
A Google Business Profile with no real website behind it has a structural limit. It can tell Google what you do and where you do it. It cannot demonstrate that you know your trade, answer the questions customers ask before hiring, or give an AI engine the detailed, structured content it needs to recommend you with confidence.
There is also the ChatGPT and Gemini question. These AI tools search the web when answering local business questions. They can encounter your GBP listing in search results, but they cannot read GBP data directly. They read websites. A business with a strong GBP and a thin website will show up well in Google products and poorly in AI assistant recommendations. That gap is getting more expensive as AI assistant usage grows.
What a fully optimized GBP looks like in practice
Most Google Business Profiles are partially complete. The name, address, and phone number are there from when the profile was first claimed. Everything else is at default or blank. An actually optimized GBP looks like this:
- Primary category is the most specific accurate match (Plumber, not Home Services; Dentist, not Healthcare Provider)
- Secondary categories added for each distinct service area
- Services list filled in with real service names and descriptions, not just the category name
- Hours confirmed and kept current, including special hours for holidays
- Attributes filled in (emergency service, free estimates, veteran-owned, etc.)
- Business description written to mention services, service area, and what distinguishes you, in plain language
- Q&A section answered, with the most common questions pre-answered by you rather than left for customers to answer
- Photos added and kept current
Each of these gives Google's AI more specific information to use when generating recommendations. A profile that hits all of them outranks one that only has the basics, all else being equal.
The relationship between your website and your GBP
Think of your GBP and your website as two sources telling the same story. When they agree on your business name, address, category, services, and service area, that consistency is itself a trust signal. When they conflict, or when one has information the other lacks, you create uncertainty that works against you.
A website built for AI search and a fully optimized GBP, telling the same story in the same terms, is what gets a local business into AI-generated shortlists across Google, ChatGPT, and Gemini. The guide on structured data for local businesses explains the website side of that equation.
